It is usually the first question after the price: how long will it take? The honest answer is that it depends on the size of the job, the state of the building, the season and how quickly decisions get made. Still, there are typical ranges, and knowing them helps you plan your flights, your rental season and your budget.

Below are the time frames we see for common jobs in Istria, what happens in each phase, and the things that most often stretch a schedule. Treat every number as a rough guide, not a promise.

Typical time ranges at a glance

JobWork on site (roughly)What can add time
Repainting an apartmenta few days to 2 weeksrepairs to plaster, damp patches, furniture to move
Bathroom renovation2 to 4 weekshidden pipe problems, waiting for tiles or a shower screen
Kitchen replacement1 to 3 weeks on sitemade-to-measure units and worktops often take several weeks to produce
Full apartment renovation6 to 12 weekselectrics and plumbing redone, new layout, building rules
Whole house modernisation3 to 9 monthsroof, windows, insulation, permits, access
Stone house or ruinoften a year or moredesign and permits, structural work, weather

These are times for the work itself. Planning, getting quotes and ordering materials come before that and can easily take as long as the work, especially when you are deciding from abroad.

Bathroom: two to four weeks, usually

A standard bathroom renovation follows a fixed order: stripping out old tiles and fittings, new pipes and wiring in the walls, waterproofing, tiling, then fitting the toilet, basin, shower and furniture. Each step needs the previous one finished, and some of them need drying time. Waterproofing and tile adhesive cannot be rushed without risking leaks later.

The biggest unknown is what is behind the old tiles. In older Istrian houses we often find old galvanised pipes, improvised connections or damp in the wall. Fixing that properly adds days, but it is much cheaper now than after the new tiles are on. Our article on bathrooms for holiday homes goes into materials and ventilation.

Apartment: six to twelve weeks

A full apartment renovation usually means new electrics, new plumbing, a new bathroom and kitchen, new floors, sometimes new drywall partitions and ceilings, and painting at the end. Several trades work in sequence, and the order matters: walls are closed only after the electrician and plumber have finished, floors go down after the wet work, and painting comes almost last.

In apartment buildings, house rules and neighbours also shape the timetable. Noisy work is often limited to certain hours, deliveries may need to be carried up stairs, and parking near the building can be difficult in town centres such as Pula/Pola or Rovinj/Rovigno.

Whole house: months, not weeks

Modernising a whole house can include the roof, windows, insulation, heating and cooling, all installations and finishes. Some of it depends on the weather, some on factory lead times, and some on paperwork. If the work needs a permit or project documentation, that part alone can take months before anyone starts on site. Our general guide to renovation permits explains why it is worth asking an architect or the municipality early.

Stone houses and ruins take longest. Walls may need repair, the roof is often replaced, and lime-based work needs time to cure. If you are at the buying stage, read our reality check on buying a ruin before you fix a moving-in date.

What usually causes delays

  • Hidden problems. Rotten beams, damp walls, old wiring or blocked drains only show up once things are opened.
  • Material lead times. Made-to-measure windows, kitchens and some tiles can take several weeks to arrive. Ordering early is the single best way to save time.
  • Drying times. A new screed, plaster or waterproofing has to dry before the next layer. Cold, damp winter weather slows this down.
  • Summer restrictions. Many coastal towns limit noisy building work during the tourist season. Check the local rules for your address.
  • Busy tradesmen in spring. Before the season everyone wants their holiday home finished, so good tradesmen are booked up.
  • Slow decisions. Waiting a week for a tile choice or an answer by e-mail stops the crew. Quick replies on WhatsApp keep things moving.
  • Changes during the job. Moving a wall or a socket after the plaster is done means redoing work.

TipChoose tiles, sanitaryware, windows and kitchen units before work starts, not during it. When the materials are ordered or already on site, the tradesmen can work through without gaps.

When to start if you want to be ready for the season

Late autumn and winter are usually the calmest time to renovate in Istria. Tradesmen have more free time, there are no summer restrictions, and you avoid working around guests. For a bathroom or apartment you want ready by spring, it makes sense to get quotes in early autumn and start by November or December. A whole house needs a longer run-up. How we keep a schedule realistic

With Istria Renovation you have one contact person who brings in the right trade from our network for each stage of the job. That makes the sequence easier to plan: the plumber knows when the tiler is coming, and the painter knows when the walls will be ready. While you are abroad, you get regular photo updates, so you can see progress and make decisions quickly. If you are planning from home, our article on renovating from abroad explains how that works day to day.

For a first idea of the budget alongside the timing, try the free renovation cost calculator, or look at our house and apartment renovation page.

Send us photos or a short video of the rooms on WhatsApp and tell us when you would like the work done. We will come back with a rough price range and a realistic time frame.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a bathroom renovation take in Croatia?

A typical bathroom takes roughly two to four weeks of work on site, depending on its size, what is found behind the old tiles and whether all materials are ready when work starts.

Can a renovation be done while I am not in Istria?

Yes. Many owners live abroad during the work. You agree the scope and materials beforehand, leave keys with the contact person and follow progress through regular photos and video calls.

Can building work be done in summer in Istria?

Some work can, but many coastal towns limit noisy building work during the tourist season, and rentals are usually occupied. Check the rules for your municipality and, where possible, plan bigger jobs for autumn and winter.

What is the most common reason a renovation runs late?

Usually a mix of hidden problems in old buildings, materials that take weeks to arrive and decisions that wait too long. Ordering materials early and replying quickly prevents most delays.
